To Our Visitors
We welcome you to St. John's Episcopal Church whether you are simply an out-of-town visitor, someone new to the community or someone seeking a church home. We're very glad, in any case, that you are expressing an interest in us. We believe that we are a great church, full of wonderful people, and hope that you too will find this to be true when you visit us. We are like budding flowers - please come grow with us! Below you will find some information which we hope will be useful during your visit:
Our Sunday worship services are at 7:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. The 7:30 service is a said mass (no music) and fairly quiet. This service usually last around 35 minutes and uses the Rite I liturgy. The 10:00 service, on the other hand, uses Rite II, will last approximately a little over an hour and is a choral mass with full organ music. Other services are Saturday mornings (7:30 a.m. - chapel) and Wednesday evening (6:00 p.m. - chapel).

St. John's is located at 130 West Eldorado Street in Decatur, Illinois. Our phone number is 217-428-4461. Click HERE to open a map with easy driving directions. Parking is available in our parking lot located off Church Street.
Childcare is available on Sunday mornings in the nursery just off the Parish Hall on the main floor. Nursery care begins at 9:00 a.m. and lasts through the 10:00 service until communion when children are brought back to their parents. Snacks are also provided. Care is also available for some special services throughout the year.
Sunday school for adults is upstairs in the parish hall classroom and downstairs for children. Both are at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.
An usher will give you a bulletin which outlines the order of our service, including page numbers, when to stand, when to kneel, etc. You will also find in each pew The Book of Common Prayer and the Hymnal. Please feel free to ask the person sitting next to you for any assistance you may need. Any baptized person is welcome to receive communion.
Following the 10:00 service on Sunday mornings you are invited to come to the Parish Hall for coffee and light morning snacks. This is a great opportunity for you to meet others and learn more about who we are. Please consider joining us.
WHAT IS AN EPISCOPALIAN?
The Episcopal Church in the United States is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, is the titular leader of the Anglican Communion. In the United States, the presiding Bishop is the "Chief Pastor and Primate" of the Episcopal Church. The individual elected to this position serves for nine years. The current Bishop of the Episcopal Church is the Reverend . St. John's is located in the Diocese of Springfield which represents the Episcopal/Anglican Communion of Central and Southern Illinois. The Right Reverend Daniel H. Martins currently serves as the 11th Bishop of Springfield. The Episcopal Church embraces a diverse people united by the common recognition of Scripture and tradition. It is a church that encourages dialogue, discussion, ongoing study and active participation in the liturgy and sacraments. The Book of Common Prayer is the source of much of our liturgy, sacramental rites, prayers and theology.
JOINING ST. JOHN'S:
On any Sunday, a parish member, a greeter or usher will most likely recognize you as a visitor and welcome you as you enter through our doors. Please take a moment to sign our guest book and fill out a visitor card. You can join St. John's Episcopal Church by calling our parish office (217-428-4461) and speaking with our rector. He will be glad to provide you with particular details in joining our church and becoming an Episcopalian or transferring your records from your previous Episcopal Church.
